Bob Hampton's Kwajalein At Night

The $6,000,000 Mistake

This is the DCCB (Defense Center Control Building), the largest building on the island, located at the extreme west end of Kwajalein.  Some people called it "Cyclops", some called it the "Six Million Dollar Mistake".  It was to have been a large phased array radar system associated with some ABM experiments back in the 1960s or '70s, but was never completed.  This is a (digitally enhanced) self-portrait of me on the roof of it.

"C-boats" at the Small Boat Marina (foreground) provided access to the reefs and shipwrecks in the southern part of Kwajalein Lagoon.

The Elephant Cage

This is "The Elephant Cage", a remnant of the Nike-Zeus ABM experiments of the 1960s.

The dome inside the Elephant Cage contained a satellite communications system.
