Nippo Maru

The Nippo Maru

The Nippo Maru is a 352 ft. long, five hold freighter. It sits upright on the bottom with a heavy list to port.

It's a beautiful shipwreck, loaded with interesting equipment and relics.
Tank on the Nippo Maru

The Nippo Maru's most interesting cargo was the "Type 95" Japanese Tank parked on the port side next to the #2 cargo hold.

The ship was also carrying several anti tank guns, a stack of anti boat mines, and lots of anti aircraft ammunition.
The Nippo Maru

The Nippo Maru had the most beautiful bridge of any shipwreck I've ever seen anywhere.

It's large open windows provided a commanding view of the forward parts of the dark vessel.

The ship's wheel had long ago dissipated into the sea, but the wheelstand still seemed intact.
Truck Chassis on the Nippo Maru

I was told that the deer antler propped on the engine room telegraph had some significance in the Japanese Shinto religion.

I can't say exactly why, but the Nippo Maru seemed to me to be the most mysterious of the wrecks at Truk.
