A real, working sundial is more than just a decoration, it's a useful and fascinating astronomical instrument! It can tell you the time, not by keeping the time like a clock but by actually determining the current time from the relative positions of the Earth and Sun at that moment. So when you read a sundial, you're not just reading the output of a time counter, you're making an astronomical observation of the Sun's position in the sky!
I'm making astronomically correct sundials that actually function as working timepieces. My sundials are custom made for the place where they will be used, which is the only way a sundial can be truly accurate! They accurately and directly display Local Apparent Solar Time, corrected for latitude, longitude, and time zone.
Solar time is still the reference to which clock time must ultimately comply, or we could end up with high noon happening just after sunset! And in it's own way, a well designed sundial can be as accurate as any clock, and a lot more fun to watch!

This sundial is a translucent variation of the "common" vertical sundial, using for it's gnomon (shadow caster) the edge of a plane instead of a rod.
The face of this sundial is made of black vinyl over white acrylic. The gnomon and frame are steel. When properly installed this sundial faces toward due north (as in photo at right, which is looking toward the south). This type can be designed for other generally south facing angles at a small additional charge.
For a Spectacular indoor sundial, this type can be custom designed into any generally south facing window!
Sundial shown is 20" wide by 13" high.
